The Lieutenant

Dear Editor,

The awkward part of running for governor as a 'non-partisan' is that, unlike partisan candidates, you need a designated running mate to make it to the ballot. I've asked almost everyone I meet if they wanted to be Lieutenant governor, as long as they looked at least thirty, and not like a felon, and like they have been in Hawaii for at least six years. Accordingly, I didn't ask tourists. I did ask one guy who looked like he'd fit the bill, but he copped to being a felon. I've asked a House representative; also his secretary. I asked the mailman. I asked my neighbor. I asked my neighbor's dog and it bit me. Seems like no one is interested in the job.

Weird, because it's got to be the cushiest job in town. It's also unfortunate, because it means that the fight against Common Core will not be fought in this gubernatorial race.
